Don't Get Burned by Phone Scams

 

Beware of fraudulent activity in which callers falsely claim to be from the “electric company” or “power company.”  Scam callers claim you are behind on your payment and your services will be discontinued, usually within the hour, unless you make a payment immediately with a pre-paid debit card. Don’t be fooled even if the phone number on your caller ID looks like it’s coming from your utility company.  Often times, scammers use “spoofing technology” to make the caller ID display the name and phone number of the local utility leading you to believe the call is legitimate. 

Mohave Electric members who have delinquent accounts receive multiple written notifications by mail prior to electric service disconnection, never just a single notification one hour before disconnection and you would never be asked to purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid electric service disconnection.

If someone contacts you identifying themselves as the “electric company” or “power company” and you believe the call is a scam, hang up and call your local law enforcement agency.  Never share your personal information, including birthday, Social Security number, credit card numbers or banking account information, unless you initiated the contact.

If you have questions about your Mohave Electric account, you can call member services at (928) 763-1100 to verify your account status. After 5 p.m., call the outage number at 1-844-632-2667 and select option “1.”  You will hear the outage reporting menu but pressing “0” at any time will direct you to an operator.
